Technology and the internet is changing how we do business but has not yet made traditional print design redundant. Most companies still use a variety of print design through various channels to promote their products and services. Print design (or graphic design as it is more traditionally known) is a process of using research and idea generation to identify your key message/s, target audience and create a form of communication with words and pictures that help to educate and influence your customers. We are surrounded by design everywhere and everything that is man-made has been designed, whether consciously or not. Your graphic design (advertising, brochures, booklets, stationery, leaflets, flyers, exhibition displays, POS and posters) should connect with your customers and offer attractive propositions to existing and potential clients with a consistent, relevant key message.
Great design can be divided into four distinct phases: discover, define, develop and deliver. The discovery involves research and gathering of ideas allowing us to look at your business area and competition and then evaluate this information to generate ideas and concepts. The defining is the strategic thinking through of what you what to achieve with your design and print developing a creative brief looking at the challenge and how the problem can be solved and then creating some firm concepts, developing and refining them. Finally the delivery is the actual creating and launching to the end user and then afterwards evaluating the success of the project.
Your print design should be focused on the end user (your customers), thinking about their needs and how they will use the product, service or the experience they will get from your business. If your print design focuses on your customers and their needs it will ensure your message says you care about their real needs, whether the users are fully aware of them or not. All design and print should convey information clearly and efficiently with a clear message that is easy to understand. Great graphic design can sometimes seem as obvious as common sense.
